New Approach to Roll Structure Control with Winding Force, 1996 Finishing and Converting Conference Proceedings

In the winding process, control of the basic parameters of web tension, torque and nip have been important factors for many years. Today as roll sizes continue to increase, as production of value-added grades increases, and requirements for higher quality for end users increase in a worldwide market, the limitations of nip-induced wound-in tension is becoming more evident. It becomes evident that the use of WINDING FORCE, an applied torque, to precisely tension the outer surface layers of the roll is the most effective method to build roll structure. Its application to a number of paper grades is discussed in this paper.
