To achieve value-added converted products it is essential to have the properly specified starting materials. This means that the material such as paper should not be under specified. In this scenario the product will not meet end user’s performance. The paper should not be over specified. In this case the product meets customer’s demand, but parameters that are not needed are unnecessarily optimized to the level that the supplier can not make this grade profitably. The detriment of overloading any processes has been well learned (1). By partnership with the supplier the right specification can be built-in such that end user’s performances are met and that the supplier as well the converter can achieve good runnability and profitability. In this paper several product development scenarios will be presented to illustrate the methodology of optimizing the properties of the paper to attain good runnability and high performance. To facilitate this process partnership between supplier and customer is essential.
