Pursuing the Elusive Crepe Wrinkle, 1997 Finishing and Converting Conference Proceedings

Crepe wrinkles are persistent defects that go together with lightweight papers, low sheet-to-sheet fiction coefficients, and softer winding techniques. They present a difficult quality control problem since they are not normally seen until the roll unwinds. They have been correlated with the amount of J-line deformation on specific pieces of winding equipment, since the J-line is an indicator of soft roll winding conditions. But the J-line cannot be applied in normal production, and is only an approximate indicator of the presence of defects. The mechanism behind the formation of crepe wrinkles is the subject of this presentation, and new methods are suggested to confirm these theories. Once the reason behind crepe wrinkle formation becomes obvious, suitable evasive measures can be taken to minimize their occurrence.
