Caledonian Paper Plc is a modern lightweight-coated (LWC) paper mill on the west coast of Scotland, producing single-coated grades in the range of 42 to 80 gsm. All of the mills’ production is processed through two 12-roll Kleinewefer supercalenders which are fitted with partial flying splice systems, temperature-control circuits and zone-controlled rolls. In 1995, it became clear that the capacity of these calenders was severely restricting the mill output, in the form of papermachine and coater lost time. This paper will discuss the options considered for increasing supercalender capacity, the route selected and the results achieved. The possibilities for future development will also be discussed.
