Light weight printing grades with smoother printing surfaces are in increased demand. There are also production-related pressures to wind larger rolls at increased production rates. Meanwhile there is an increase in the amount of recycled fiber accompanied by an assortment of additives. As a result, there have been fundamental changes with the physical properties of the web. The effect of the surface chemistry on paper-to-paper friction and wound roll density are introduced as important factors in evaluating the potential success of winding. An informative guide for winding equipment design criteria to reduce the potential of core bursts and crepe wrinkles in today’s winding processes will be presented.
