To provide the finishing capability required to keep pace with today’s papermaking processes on- and off-machine, new multinip calender technology has been developed. The development approach and resulting calender design are described. Key to the technology is a unique calender stack loading principle which provides full or variable dead load relief. Combined with other design innovations, the new loading principle provides substantially improved quality and production capabilities, as shown by pertinent process results for printing and writing paper grades.
