The metering size press was developed to overcome the speed limitation on surface sizing uncoated free sheet papers. Over the past decade, it has become a means to improving the quality of coated free sheet and coated groundwood papers, and various paperboard grades. It has also become a key tool for development of new value-added grades of paper including FCO (film coated offset), non-impact imaging papers, barrier coated packaging papers, coated linerboard, and improved strength corrugating medium. It may provide a means to overcome some of the problems in heat set offset printing of SC papers. Applications of this new technology maybe limited only by the imagination of papermakers and chemical suppliers.
