Film applicators, as a gate roll train or an inclined two-roll unit equipped with applicator heads, are used to prepare the surfaces of paper and board grades for coating or finishing operations that follow. Film coater technology dates back to the early 1930’s where several process and quality challenges slowly became insurmountable. However, today there has been a renewed inter-est in film coaters as paper industry technologies continue to improve. This paper reviews today’s film coating challenges related to the papermaking process and defines future directions in film coating.
