Kinetics of the Direct Causticizing Reaction Between Sodium Carbonate and Titanium Dioxide, 1991 Forest Products Symposium Proceedings

The kinetics of CO2 release from the solid (or melt)-solid reaction between Na2 CO2 and Ti02 are studied in a tube furnace from 750 to 925 degrees Celsius. It is found that complete conversion of Na2 C03 can easily be achieved when using a TiO2 /Na2 CO3 molar ratio of at least 1.25, leading to the formation of 4Na2 0-5TiG2 . The kinetic data of the formation of 4Na2 0.5TiO2 are well described by a reaction model with product layer diffusion control. The activation energy of the formation reaction of 4Na2 O-5TiO2 in the solid state is 216 kJ/mol. The kinetics of the reaction between Na2 CO3 and Na2 O-3TiO2 , the insoluble hydrolysis product of Na2 O-TiO2 or 4Na2 0-5Ti02 , are also investigated. The kinetics are very similar to those obtained with pure TiO2 , but the activation energy is much higher at 365 kJ/mol. It is concluded that Na2 O-3TiO3 can be recycled and fully used for Co2 release from fresh Na2CO3 .
