Numerical Investigation of Three Tissue Machine Headboxes, 1991 Forest Products Symposium Proceedings
Flow characteristics of three commercial tissue machine headboxes are investigated using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code Fluent/BFC TM . Three dimensional turbulent water flow simulations are performed for each nozzle design. Results for Reynolds stress levels, turbulent kinetic energy, macroscale of turbulence and secondary flows are reported. Turbulence generation and characteristics are found to differ significantly among the three designs. Parametric studies are performed to investigate the effect of various design and operational parameters on headbox performance. Grid sensitivity studies and comparison against literature data for similar flows are used to estimate accuracy.
