My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
The objective of this research was to understand the behavior of pressure sensitive adhesive particles during passage through a slot in a pressure screen. The passage of pressure sensitive adhesive particles was analyzed at different operating temperatures. Also, particles with a variety of sizes, as a result of pulping time, were considered. The pressurized single slot device had a slot width of 0.007 inches (0.18 mm), which is similar to typical slot widths used in industry of 0.006-0.012 inches (0.15-0.30 mm). Both automated image analysis and manual analysis of particles correlated with each other and were used in this study. Factors that affected the passage of adhesive particles through the slot were operating temperature and some of the particle dimensions. Increasing the operating temperature increased the particle passage. These experiments showed that significant fractions of particles with widths greater than the slot width were able to pass through the slot. Some of the dimensions were found to decrease upon passage through the slot. These findings are useful in understanding how pressure sensitive adhesive particles are able to pass through the slots of an industrial pressure screen.
