Inspection for Cracking of Composite Tubes in Black Liquor Recovery Boilers, 2002 Fall Technical Conference
The use of composite tubes to make walls and floors in kraft recovery boilers has brought a new set of problems to
the attention of the industry. Foremost among these has been the occurrence of cracking on composite tubes and
membranes in boiler walls and floors. Cracks have been found in floor tubes, spout opening tubes, tubes that form
air port openings and wall tubes near the bed. Many of these cracks have proven difficult to find, even by wellqualified
technicians using standard procedures. A TAPPI Technical Information Paper (TIP) has been written to
provide guidance to boiler owners and inspection personnel on where to find cracks in composite tubes and on
techniques that have proven successful in locating cracks. This paper summarizes the contents of this TIP (0402-30).
