The Recyclability of Papers Treated with Environmentally-Friendly PET Polyesters, 2002 Fall Technical Conference

New water-dispersible polyesters made with recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) are used as wetstrength chemicals. These polyester resins consist of three sections: PET backbone, functional groups, and hydrophilic end groups. The repulpability and recyclability of the paper made with these polyesters was studied with different dosages at different repulping conditions. The paper with the highest polyester dosage (200 pounds per ton of fiber) can be repulped. The polyester dispersion can be used with other wetstrength resins, such as polyamideepichlorohydrin; the polyester not only adds additional dry and wet strength, but also makes the nonrepulpable wetstrength resin repulpable. The mechanism for the polyesters increasing paper strength and repulpability was investigated by different repulping processes.
