Water Quality Guidelines and Monitoring Requirements for Paper Mill Boilers Operating with Softened Makeup Water, 2002 Fall Technical Conference
Despite the overall trend toward using high-purity feedwater systems in the paper industry, many low to midpressure
paper mill boilers operate with softened water as the primary feedwater makeup source. These boilers
require specific water quality as well as system monitoring to ensure safe, reliable service. This paper defines the
water quality guidelines and monitoring requirements for boilers operating with softened makeup water. Topics for
sampling and monitoring water quality include selecting sample points, monitoring sample points, sampling
methods, sample point control limits, and analyzing samples. Additionally, this paper presents specific sample point
control limits for boiler feedwater and boiler water.
