Corrosion Damage Mechanisms and their Prevention in Tanks Containing Alkaline Pulping Liquors, 2002 Fall Technical Conference
Corrosion damage mechanisms affecting the integrity of carbon steel tanks containing green, white and black
liquors used in alkaline pulping are described. General corrosion characteristics and controlling factors for carbon
steel corrosion in each type of liquor are reviewed. The poor predictability of corrosion rates for carbon steel is
emphasized. The paper discusses how to use knowledge of the corrosion damage mechanisms affecting a specific
tank to devise cost-effective strategies for inspecting the tank and for preventing corrosion. The superior corrosion
performance of stainless steels in these types of liquors is reviewed, as is their increased utilization by mills seeking
maintenance-free liquor tanks.
