Sampling the Deinking Process, 2002 Fall Technical Conference

Due to the nature of the deinking process, there are key unit operational points commonly sampled by the industry. This paper reviews the reasons behind sampling, common sampling points in deinking operations (pulper, flotation feed, flotation accept, post thickening of the stock, and final deinked pulp) and what is measured across the industry (pH, consistency, ISO Brightness, and ERIC). The industry averages for pH, consistency, ISO Brightness, ash and hardness are reported based on seven years of mill surveys. Also investigated are typical sampling techniques and preparation of the sample pad. The last portion of the paper looks at possible sources of errors in measurements due to pad preparation.
