My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
Flue gases from the recovery and power boilers at the MeadWestvaco Stevenson, Alabama mill are scrubbed to remove sulfur dioxide to meet emission standards. Scrubbing is accomplished with sodium carbonate solution and the scrubber blow down is recycled as make up to the mill’s chemical recovery system. Since the sodium/sulfur content of the scrubber blowdown streams introduced are higher than the mill’s current make up requirements, the excess green liquor is shipped. In-process disposal of the power boiler scrubber blow down is required for regulatory purposes. Several process alternatives were examined to reduce sodium carbonate usage. The alternatives were evaluated with process simulation techniques and mill trials and a cost-effective solution was implemented.
