Inorganic Linings in Liquor Tanks - A Highly Cost-Effective Corrosion Protection Alternative, 2002 Fall Technical Conference
Corrosion-related damage to alkaline liquor tankage in pulp and paper mills costs the industry millions of dollars
each year.
Welded repairs and metallurgical upgrades can be effective, but are costly and time-consuming. Non-metallic
solutions for protecting liquor tanks from corroding can substantially extend their service lives. Alkali-resistant
gunned and brick linings have successful performance histories in liquor tanks and are proven cost-effective
alternatives to extensive welded repairs or to metallurgical upgrades.
This paper presents basic information on the composition of these inorganic lining materials, how they are installed,
and where each type performs best. Additionally, case histories in green, black, and white liquor service will be
presented.
