My TAPPI Story: Rory Wolf
TAPPISAFE
High yield pulping of kenaf was conducted using bast/core fiber mix with short time sodium carbonate cooks. The yields were maintained between 65 to 75% range. The resultant pulps had high strength properties all across the range for tensile, ring crush, CMT, CFC, and STFI. The kenaf pulps were then mixed with OCC pulp in 30/70 ratio and the resultant handsheets had 25 to 50% better strength properties than the corresponding handsheets made from hardwood / OCC mix. In addition, it was found that kenaf fibers had high stretch values too. In a subsequent experiment, designed to study fibril angles, it was found that it has a low fibril angle of less than 10 degrees. Currently, additional experiments are being proposed to differentiate the core from bast fibers in terms of fibril angle and related properties.
