Reduce Pulp & Paper Mill Energy Costs Through Multi-Unit Optimization, 2002 Fall Technical Conference

The U.S. paper and allied products industry is the third largest user of purchased energy, although it generates nearly 56% of its needs through co-generation. By improving operational efficiency through process optimization, the industry can realize significant economic and environmental benefits. Since steam and electricity represent a significant portion of the operating costs, optimizing powerhouse operation is beneficial. In this paper, a multi-unit optimization solution is presented for powerhouse operation, which can be used as an offline advisor, an online controller, or for conducting what-if studies. The concepts presented here are extended to pulp mill operations such as brown stock washing.
