Diatomite for Stickies Pacification, 2002 Fall Technical Conference
The use of diatomite for organic deposit control on a paper machine was first discovered by a paper mill more than
20 years ago. Celite Corporation studied this phenomenon and found that this unique mineral, which is both
organophilic and hydrophilic, was quite effective in pacifying all types of “stickies” found in the papermaking
process. Successful applications have been on recycle and non-recycle grades including text and cover, writing and
printing, (coated and uncoated), linerboard, corrugating medium, tissue and towel, and even glassine. Because of the
typically small 0.5% dosage and diatomite’s chemical inertness, paper properties and wet end chemistry are not
affected. Cost effectiveness is achieved through improved machine run-ability and the flexibility to use lower
quality (and lower cost) secondary fiber.
