Factors Affecting Quantification of Contaminants by Image Analysis, 2002 Fall Technical Conference

Image analysis of dyed samples has become a common method of quantifying contaminants in handsheets. Five factors were tested for their impact on image analysis results. The factors were: heat drying, pressing, dye method, washing, and scanner contrast setting. Washing was the most significant factor. By improving the contrast between PSA particles and background fibers, washing tended to increase PPM values. Unfortunately, washing did not uniformly affect of the results of the two adhesives tested. Based on the results of this study an image analysis test method is proposed.
