Burning Excess Streams in Recovery Boilers, 2002 Fall Technical Conference
Demands for mill closure and improved waste handling have resulted in new waste streams that need to be disposed
of. Environmental regulations in EU strive to their disposal by burning them in a recovery boiler. It has become more
and more common to refer all waste streams in spite of their possible adverse effect to be handled in a recovery
boiler.
The equipment and the experience of burning excess steams in a large 3500 tds/d recovery boiler are discussed. In
this boiler black liquor, soap, low concentration NCG’s, high concentration NCG’s, methanol, turpentine, natural
gas, light fuel oil and biosludge are incinerated.
The new recommendations of Finnish Recovery Boiler Users Association concerning “Combustion of waste streams
in a recovery boiler” are discussed. Differences to BLRBAC’s recommendations are highlighted.
