My TAPPI Story: Rory Wolf
TAPPISAFE
A comprehensive review of the type and extent of damage experienced in explosions of recovery boilers of different designs was completed for the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) Recovery Boiler Committee. The objective was to determine the relationship between boiler design and explosion damage. The investigation included twenty boilers supplied by five boiler manufacturers. An analyzed data base and an information summary were developed that focused on the pressure part integrity of the furnace corners and the floor. These are the areas of the furnace where a release of high temperature water from a ruptured tube heightens the danger to personnel. Conclusions and observations resulting from the investigation are intended to provide the boiler manufacturers, industry associations and the operating companies information that can be used to develop recommendations on design practices, modifications and/or other measures that will increase personnel safety. This report is a summary of the reported observations and results learned from the investigation.
