A New Hydrogen Peroxide Process to Lower Complexity and Cost, 2002 Fall Technical Conference
A dramatically new process has been developed and patented by Princeton Advanced Technology (PAT) to produce
hydrogen peroxide directly under controlled, safe conditions. This new direct process uses less energy, generates no
appreciable wastes, all at a reduced capital and operating costs compared to the existing indirect process. The U.S.
DOE has acknowledged these innovations by awarding PAT and its industrial partner, Chemical Products
Corporation (CPC) with a grant to construct and operate the first commercial demonstration unit at their facilities in
Cartersville, GA.
This new process has been under development for seven years, establishing process operating conditions, preferred
catalyst, equipment requirements and plant design factors. Considerable laboratory testing has demonstrated 90%
hydrogen selectivity. Strategies to enhance peroxide’s bleaching effectiveness are discussed.
The overall business objective is to build and operate 5-40 million pounds per year skid-mounted generators to
produce hydrogen peroxide for "over the fence" delivery to pulp-paper mills to provide a more reliable service at a
lower cost. This innovative approach for supplying peroxide will eliminate supply uncertainties, safety environmental
concerns and high shipping costs from distant central plants.
