Minor Sources of Carbonate in Kraft Pulping and Oxygen Delignification Processes, 2002 Fall Technical Conference

Carbonate in black liquor is one of the major species responsible for evaporator fouling in the kraft chemical recovery process. This study employed a headspace gas chromatographic method to accurately determine carbonate in black liquor and other kraft liquid streams. It was found that carbonate can be formed in pulping and oxygen delignification processes. For pulping of a bleachable-grade pulp of softwood, the amount of carbonate formation in pulping is about 18% of the total carbonate in black liquor. The study also showed that carbonate formation in oxygen delignification linearly correlates well to the reduction of pulp kappa number.
