Reductions in Western North America’s industrial forest land base, unsustainable harvests from the tropical forests of the Asia-Pacific region, collapse of the Russian forest sector and a worldwide concern with natural forest preservation have coincided at a tune when it is widely predicted that global demand for industrial roundwood will increase by 400-600 million m3 over the next 15 years (2010). One very important source of new supply will be the plantation forests of the southern hemisphere - namely South America, Southern Africa, Oceania, and Southeast Asia. This paper presents a situation assessment for South America with a focus on the principal plantation countries; Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Venezuela.
