Global Wood Fiber Balance: What it is; What it Means, 1995 Global Fiber Supply Symposium Proceedings

Robert W. Hagler

Wood Resources International Ltd.

An analysis of current global wood fiber supply and demand shows opportunity for incremental expansion of demand, and sufficient surplus fiber to support current growth rates through the next decade. However, many traditional forest product manufacturing regions face actual declines in wood availability, and increasing real costs, at the same time that evolving plantation resources redefine competitive postions within the global forest products industry. An environment of “relative fiber scarcity” will precipitate the continued re-structuring of the global industry, and force participants to adjust production, marketing, and investment strategies in order to secure, and optimize more limited global fiber resources.
