In recent years the concept of sustainability has been used so often and so broadly that it has lost any precise meaning. We now talk of sustainability of the global system, sustainability of the ecosystem, sustainability of the natural system and so forth. In addition, just how and how much of these systems we desire to sustain is becoming foggy. Given the presence of so many definitions of sustainability, it is almost certain that many of these articulation are not consistent with one another.
