Nonwood plant fibers, or nonwoods, were used for paper long before means to pulp wood were discovered, and are still used in large quantities in regions with inadequate forest resources. Recent concerns about the fiber supply for the paper industry is prompting a resurgence in the interest in nonwoods for paper and related products. The nature of these raw materials and their current and future roles as fiber resources for the paper industry are reviewed. Availability and installed pulping capacities worldwide are described. Special considerations in the use of nonwoods, including their non-fibrous components, field yields, by-product disposal, their processing into quality pulps and fall-back fiber supply considerations are discussed.
