UV Protection of Hot Melt Adhesives Used in Packaging Applications, 2000 Hot Melt Symposium Proceedings

Dr. Neal J. Earhart--Hot Melt Adhesives (HMA’s) are extensively used in labels and tapes for packaging applications. During their lifetime these products may be exposed to ultraviolet light. Exposure to UV light can result in degradation of the hydrocarbon components of the HMA leading to premature failure or discoloration. The resistance of hot melt adhesives to UV light induced degradation can be improved by the use of light stabilizers. This paper will review the mechanisms and use of light stabilizers.
