A hot melt adhesive (HMA) is a complex blend of a base polymer, a tackifying resin, rheological agents. stabilisers and in some cases fillers. The key properties for the adhesive are the open time, the setting time, the viscosity, the mechanical properties and the adhesion. These end use properties strongly depend on the hot melt formulation and the optimisation of the performances stands today in the formulators’ hands.
In this paper, a physico-chemical approach of the formulation of hot melt will be presented. A correlation between physico-chemical properties and the end use properties of the adhesive will be shown. More particularly the importance of miscibility between the polymer and the tackifying resin for the control of end use properties such as transparency and adhesion will be highlighted.
