My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
Recent advances in acrylic polymerization technology has led to a new family of phase separated acrylic graft copolymers. The thermoplastic elastomer characteristics exhibited by these graft copolymers have been utilized in the development of an acrylic base adhesive for HMPS applications. The commercialization of these systems has lagged because of unavailability of the necessary building blocks - macromonomers - at affordable prices. Du Pont is now introducing a series of four macromonomer resins made by a novel SCT technology with 95+% of terminal alkacryl terminal groups. These new macromonomers - Elvacite M resins -react readily with acrylic or styrene type macromonomers to form a wide range of graft copolymers with unique properties based on a separation of different polymer characteristics concentrated now in a single molecule (e.g. hydrophillic/hydrophobic or high/low Tg segments).
