Die or Roller Coating - That's the Question, 1992 Hot Melt Symposium Proceedings
For coatings with pressure sensitive adhesives with short self-life hotmelt is the most reasonable answer. Hygenic products and price labels form the area for hotmelt coatings. Due to the lower costs for manufacturing hotmelts are becoming more and more interesting as well for other products. However, this was limited in the past by quality requirements in comparison with dispersion coatings.
The development is going on and has led to new hotmelts which come nearer to the quality of dispersion coatings thus creating new markets for the hotmelts. The price of hotmelts of higher resistance against UV and aging is higher, but the endproduct is still very reasonable in price, when the hotmelt product is manufactured in great quantities.
The lecture compares the methods of die coating to the method of roller coating and shows advantages and disadvantages of either system. To find the right decision for an investment in hotmelt coaters some assistance is added.
