New Insights Concerning the Stabilization of Hot Melt Adhesives, 1992 Hot Melt Symposium Proceedings

Hot Melt Adhesives (HMA) are generally produced by the compounding of several components: polymers, tackifiers, and waxes or oils. Thermooxidative degradation of these components can greatly affect the properties of a HMA. A majority of the polymeric components, such as SBS, EVA, or APP, degrade through a crosslinking mechanism. This paper will focus on the thermooxidative stabilization of HMA’s based on styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS) block copolymers, which under normal conditions degrade via a chain scission mechanism.

Various stabilization systems, including a new generation liquid antioxidant, are investigated.
