Hot melt adhesives are a common component of paper and paperboard packaging materials that are destined to be recycled. Typically, these hot melts break up into small pieces during the hydro pulping process and are consequently, difficult to remove from the system. In addition, they can agglomerate into sticky masses that foul processing equipment and contaminate the paper product being formed.

Developments in repulpable hot melt technology enable recyclers to minimize the problems inherent with conventional hot melts. Repulpable hot melts discussed in this paper include water soluble and/or dispersable products, reactive hot melts, and non-dispersable thermoplastic hot melt adhesives.
