Effect of a Specialty Fischer-Tropsch Wax on the Performance of EVA Hot Melt Adhesives, 1993 Hot Melt Symposium Proceedings

William J Honiball

A new type of Fischer-Tropsch wax (FTl) with tailored molecular weight distribution has been developed to enhance the performance of many hot melt adhesive formulations. This paper presents the results of studies where the performance of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) based hot melt adhesive (HMA) formulations, prepared with different types of waxes, are compared. It is shown that some of the critical performance characteristics of the adhesives can be improved by the use of FTl, enabling the formulator to use a broader spectrum of resins and EVA co-polymers. The interpretation of performance in terms of physical properties of the adhesives is given by means of thermal analysis and basic wax properties.
