Waxes and the Environment, 1994 Hot Melt Symposium Proceedings

I. N. Davie, J. G. E. McEwen

Opportunities to apply the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle to waxed paper food packaging are limited. Research carried out or supported by IGI has focussed on repulping and composting with some work in other areas of recycling and incineration. Reformulation of waxes can help avoid stickies formation during repulping and aid in physical removal of wax from the pulp. Paraffin waxes are completely biodegradable and are excellent sources of carbon for composting. Waxes papers offer processing advantages over non-waxes papers when fabricating fiber-plastic composites. Waxed papers are also an excellent source of fiber for fireplace logs as they reduce the requirements for slack wax and binder components.
