Since the discovery and use of paraffin wax as a coating for paper, equipment has been developed to apply this first hot melt. As the industry developed in the ‘50’s and ‘60’s additional resins were added to the formulations to give better resistance to oil, or better flexibility, or improved keeping properties. These changes began to push the limits of the coating equipment and coaters with the ability to handle these were developed, however they were much more temperamental than the old waxers. Today the modem hot melt coater handles viscosity’s unheard of in the ‘50’s yet they are as easy to run as the old waxer.
