My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
This study involved the evaluation of a four-component deep freeze hot melt adhesive (hma) formulation, using a statistical mixture design approach. The effect of different types of raw materials on the performance of the adhesive was investigated. New generation deep freeze adhesives, based on lotryl ® ethylene butyl acrylate (eba) copolymers, kristalex ® hydrocarbon resins and paraflint ® c80 fischer-tropsch wax best met the very stringent performance requirements of the packaging industry. The influence and synergies of these raw materials on the performance parameters of the adhesive are discussed, using various statistical models. The results improve the basic understanding of hma formulating and provide visual and practical aids to the formulator of deep freeze adhesives.
