New Method For The Characterization and Selection of Resins in EVA, EBA, and APAO Based Hot Melt Adhesives, 1996 Hot Melt Symposium Proceedings
The concept is based on the determination of polymer/resin cloudpoints and shows the relative compatibility of the two components. Two resin parameters, in conjunction with the polarity of the polymer, are major factors in polymer/resin compatibility. Displaying both parameters in a graphical form allows mapping of resin compatibility by comparison with overlaid contour lines for known polymer/resin cloudpoint mixtures. By this technique each resin has its unique position representing its compatibility with a given polymer. This new method allows easier selection of resins for hot melt adhesive formulating, saving considerable laboratory time and effort. In addition to this, the concept can be used to predict trends in the performance of the final adhesive when blends of resins and/or waxes are used.
