Continuous Processing and Pelletizing of Pressure Sensitive Adhesives, 1997 Hot Melt Symposium Proceedings
Hot Melt Adhesives are manufactured by several different processes and formed into a variety of finished product forms. These forms include bulk, brick, flakes, pastilles, pillows, and pellets. The type of forms, which can be produced, depend on the flow, cooling, and re-melting characteristics of the adhesives. The most common product form to date for Pressure Sensitive Adhesives (PSA’s) is in bulk containers. Pelletizing of EVA based adhesives is commonly done today and poses relatively few problems. However, due to the soft and tacky nature of Pressure Sensitive Adhesives, the process of forming and in particular pelletizing this type of adhesive has been slow to develop. The primary advantage of forming PSA pellets is that they alleviate some of the material handling issues encountered with bulk forms and that the re-melting of the adhesive becomes simpler and more effective.
