My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
Natural rubber latex based systems are widely used in cold seal and self seal adhesive applications because of their ability to form films which exhibit both autoadhesion and blocking resistance. However, their potential to act as sensitizers and tendency to discolor and produce different bond properties upon aging have led the industry to seek alternatives. Novel hot melt-applied cold seal systems have been developed which have adhesive performance comparable to that of natural latex without its inherent disadvantages. Data obtained through dynamic mechanical analysis are shown to correlate with sealing and blocking resistance measurements and can be used to map out an operating window for cold seal applications.
