My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
The surface chemistry of hot-melt urethane adhesive films cast on various substrates has been characterized using modern surface analysis methods. Films prepared by casting the adhesive material on Teflon, silicon-containing release paper, and metals. The surface chemical composition of debonded films indicated that the components from the casting surface appeared on the adhesive film. The role of additives in the adhesives was investigated by examining the durability of the bonds to metals. The bond strengths for the films that contained additives were less than those without additive. The additive appears to degraded bonding by migrating to the adhesive–adhered interface.
