My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
It is known that 2-tert-butyl-6-(3-tert-butyl-2-hydroxy-5-methylbenzyl)-4-methylphenyl acrylate (TS-l), and 2-(1-(2-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-pentylphenyl)ethyl)-4,6-di--tert-pentylphenyl acrylate (TS-2) can prevent thermal degradation of polymers, especially butadiene type polymers such as BR, SBR, SBS under oxygen-deficient condition by unique bifunctional stabilizing effect to trap polymer alkyl radicals. In this study, TS-1 or TS-2 was applied to SBS type hot melt adhesives as well as SBS resin. It was found TS-1 or TS-2 could prevent thermal degradation of SBS type hot melt adhesives by measuring viscosity change before and after aging under nitrogen atmosphere. It was also found that skin formation which resulted from thermal oxidative degradation in air atmosphere was prevented by using TS-1 or TS-2 with sulfur containing antioxidant (S-l). Combination of sulfur containing antioxidant and TS-1 or TS-2 was recommended for stabilization of SBS type hot melt adhesive to prevent thermal oxidative degradation and thermal degradation simultaneously.
