Structure-Property Relationships of an Improved Styrenic Block Copolymer for Pressure SensitiveAdhesiveApplications, 1998 Hot Melt Symposium Proceedings
Selective coupling and hydrogenation techniques have been used to prepare a styrenic block copolymer containing two polystyrene-poly(ethylene/butylene) arms and two polyisoprene arms. This unique rubber phase combines the high stability and strength of hydrogenated block copolymers with the high tack and low viscosity of isoprene based block copolymers in pressure sensitive adhesive formulations. The result is an adhesive base polymer with optimized properties particularly in regard to the balance of high shear strength and low adhesive melt viscosity.
Specific performance features imparted by the different rubber segments and their effects on microphase separation, rheological properties, strength, and adhesive performance will be discussed in comparison to conventional styrenic block copolymers used in adhesive applications.
