Plasticizing oils and C-5 tackifiers are commonly used to enhance the tack properties of SIS (Styrene-Isoprene- Styrene) copolymers in a variety of hot melt and solvent-borne adhesives. Such products are often used in a range of applications, where depending on the specific end use, adhesive demands can vary significantly. In this work, the effects of tackifier-to-polymer ratio, oil concentration and tackifier softening point were compared using 11-run mixture experiments, capable of cubic modeling. Two chemically similar C-5 tackifiers with 100°C and 115°C softening points were compared in combination with 2.9 to 21.9% plasticizing oil and a resin-to-copolymer ratio ranging from 1/1 to about 1.6/1 using a single source of SIS copolymer. All formulations were prepared and coated as hot melts. Testing included 180°-peel strength, rolling ball tack, quick stick, loop tack, probe tack, holding power (shear resistance) at both room temperature and 50°C and shear adhesion failure temperature. The results of this work have been collected in triangular plots, which should be helpful in selecting starting formulations to meet various performance criteria.
