Traditional thermoplastic polyurethanes have had limited use in hot melt adhesive formulations due to a tendency to degrade at elevated temperatures. These materials can lose up to 90% of their original molecular weight when held for several days at 350°F, a typical hot melt adhesive application temperature. The BFGoodrich Company has developed a new class of thermally stable TPUs that lose less than 10-20% of their molecular weight under the same conditions, thus retaining physical and adhesive properties. Heat stability performance as measured by retention of molecular weight, melt viscosity and tensile strength is provided along with adhesive characteristics for several different types of polyurethanes.
