Effects of Process Variation on Ring Formation in Lime Kilns, 2004 International Chemical Recovery Conference

Operational data from different lime kilns have been studied to find connections between process variations and the tendency for ring formation. Variation in lime mud dryness is one main operating parameter that affects the temperature profile and thereby the prerequisites for recarbonation and ring formation. A mill trial has indicated that it would be possible to reduce the fluctuation in lime mud dryness by making an on-line measurement and then control the dryness by adding a controlled amount of water.

A systematic approach at a mill can reduce the ringing problems. Measures like addition of crushed lime stone, supervision of the shell temperature, frequent short visual inspections and the use of a power shot system have proved to reduce the costs connected to ring formation.
