My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
Traditional ways to increase the capacity of recovery boiler have been the air system upgrades and heating surface modifications. This approach can lead to a compromized design, expensive construction and a long boiler outage. For some years a new method to handle future capacity increases has been an expandable recovery boiler. In the expandable boiler concept the future capacity upgrade is already taken into account in the initial boiler design. The expandable boiler ensures good performance already with the low start-up capacity. This paper presents the principles of the expandable boiler design. The paper also discusses how Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is used to design the air system and geometry of the furnace for initial and future conditions.
